Arundhati Roy, Kashmir & Democracy

The moment I read about Arundhati Roy saga, I went to Encarta to see the definition of ‘Free Speech’.

Here’s what I found: Free Speech is “Right to express uncensored opinions: the right to express any opinion publicly”

Of course, it is extremely hard for the Indian Govt, Indian media & Indian people (Yes, I’ve noticed a heavy backlash & sharp negative responses on her comments all over the web) to digest this definition getting applied to Arundhati Roy (who, as on a week ago, most Indian people were proud of).

Before anything, let me put my opinion (I hope I don’t get arrested for that! :D)

  1. I do not ‘completely’ agree with Arundhati’s criticism, I can completely understand how she arrived to such conclusion.
  2. NO country in this world can ever claim to provide its’ citizens with Full Freedom of Speech – you can’t express negativity about Nazism in Germany, you can’t criticize the Govt in China, you can’t make fun of Islam in a lot of countries, you can’t kiss in Public in UAE  – BUT, certain countries are BETTER than certain other countries when it comes to freedom of speech (rated by general public acceptance)

We can NOT neglect her completely though (well, if what she said was totally wrong, no one should have really bothered about it.). Arundhati has spoken about Kashmir – a region that houses none except victims, victims for life. A region that has always suffered, cried, pleaded for help, begged for mercy. Angry & lost generations are Kashmir’s identity. Kashmir has never enjoyed its’ own greenery, it was always overshadowed by Red – the color of blood. Kashmir has never played with its’ own snow, its’ hands were always busy cremating the dead bodies. It took months of protest & more than 100 lives for India to genuinely try for a solution

Why is it that Ordinary youngsters came on the streets to protest against India & its’ security forces?

Why does the valley hate the Indian army?

Why did Arundhati choose such extreme words to speak about Indian government?

Let’s face it – India has made mistakes on Kashmir. All these protestors are NOT crazy, they have got some serious issues – no one would just come out on the street & start shouting slogans!

That’s about Kashmir. What about Arundhati’s opinions?

Does the govt want us to be puppets to agree to everything or donkeys to nod along with whatever it says?

Sedition charges against the lady are misplaced – she’s not the one who has incited any kind of Violence. Ask the Kashmiris what’s the reason of their anguish? Ask them which group of people they’re upset about? Why does every Kashmiri want ‘Azaadi’ (freedom)? – Indian army might have to swallow a bitter pill.

I wish Kashmir to be a part of India. At the same time, I want Kashmiris to want to be in India. And for that, India has to correct a lot of things that went wrong in past 60 years in that region.

We NEED Arundhati, we NEED every intellectual in India to question what’s going on. At this moment – Arundhati & Kashmir are the biggest two challenges of the world’s largest democracy & I hope India will be able to survive & happily answer both of them!

Let’s go Shanghai

So, what was the last time you read about China in global media? 15 seconds ago, right? Despite critics trying to undermine Chinese growth in last few years, China has nothing but grown, much to the envy of rest of the world!

Be it Becoming the 2nd biggest economy or be it Becoming the country with most number of internet users in the entire world – China has brought about a major shift with impeccable growth.

China has grown way beyond manufacturing or low-cost destination – the nation leads the world on clean energy & other specialized research works.

China also has an ever-growing number of tech startups & tech savvy people contributing to a buzzing tech scene

Lack of rest of the world’s trust & imbalanced growth still remain the prime-most challenges, but hey, it’s China – they can make miracles happen! Shouldn’t we now stand up & collaborate with this new super-power? Chinese administration does make it a very intimidating nation & there are obvious concerns on their leadership for the world but there’s a pressing need to join hands with China for the global growth.

Not just that, China has improved leaps and bounds on healthcare & education – along with emerging as a Sports giant. All the qualities of a real Super power! China is perhaps balancing the world between East & the West. Traditional global forces & economic leaders are now looking up to China. World talent is moving to China more & more with each passing day. It’s not just New York, LA, London, Paris, Tokyo – we have Hong Kong, Beijing & Shanghai on the scene now – tales of changing times!

P.S. – I have always been a Chinese admirer. For those interested, here’s my blog on China for Beijing Olympics 2 years ago. Some of the views may be partial although I have chosen to ignore the dark sides of China.

My Vitthal

There was never a single time when I missed fasting on either of Ashadhi or Kartiki Ekadashi when I was home. The reason was that I did not have an option to.

Still remember how I used to cherish eating different type of food on those days.

I never believed in just one religion, always tried not to contain my beliefs – of course backed by my cosmopolitan upbringing.
For me, it’s always been difficult to believe in something I have never seen, I have always been one of those people who needed physical/material proof to trust something.

For the same reason, when I see People believing in God, the only feeling that engulfs me that of Respect! Sheer Respect!
I read, see, hear about Warkaris traveling don’t-know-how-many miles to see Vitthal-Rakhumai on the holy day; they walk, they dance, they sing, they chant without caring for heat/rains/meals. What in the world gives them the strength & will to do all that?
Looking at them makes me proud & humble at the same time.
As said by the great Saint Tukaram: “The god resides in Bhakti (beliefs), not Murti (stone/statues)”.
For me too, I see my Vitthal in all these people!
Observing fast on this day has just got a whole new meaning for me 🙂

देव दिसे ठायी ठायी
भक्त लीन भक्तापायी …
सुखालागि आला या हो
आनंदाचा पूर …

अवघे गरजे पंढरपूर
चालला नामाचा गजर …

P.S. Dedicated to my Mom & every Believer I know

Give us our God back!

It disturbs me when someone tells me what to do and what not to. It might be because of my very understanding parents – the way they gave all the freedom I ever wanted – teaching me how to utilize that freedom and not get carried away!
It disturbed me last week when I read about some heinous acts committed – by people – under the name of God, religion, caste.
It made me remember the incident happened last month – when I was asked to wrap a Dhoti around my waist since I was wearing shorts to be ‘BLESSED’ with the Deity’s Darshan (visit the God). Aren’t my legs a part of my body which is GIFTED by that god? Why would this God (or people who TRUST in him) feel uncomfortable with what I was wearing? (I agree to expect the existence of a civilized society where you can’t move around naked but this was so Talibanisque)
Taliban is not alone – we have many Talibans all around us. Women are beaten to death for infidelity, loving someone from another religion. It’s not just Pakistan or Afghanistan – it’s all over India – North India kills people for marrying outside the caste while South India beats girls for visiting pubs, wearing short clothes.
It’s not just the Muslims who suffer. Many Temples in India still disallow pregnant women, women going through their periods, people from so-called ‘Lower’ castes. Why do we take this crap? What type of GOD and what type of Religion denies people?
Why are these people lowering the stature of OUR gods?
Is Allah so small that he’s affected by a cartoon on him in a Danish newspaper? Is Ambedkar shallow to be dishonored by some idiot puts cow dung on his statue? Or is Krishna a petite existence that’s insulted by someone marrying out of caste/religion?
How are we belittling our Gods? Why in the world these fanatics can’t think that they are the ones who’re RESTRICTING something as big as GOD!!
Is it forgotten that God is above everything else? No human action can ever affect it.
Why is it that only fraction of crazy people dominate our societies, our religions? It’s because WE bow down to them, it’s we who surrender. It’s us who get suffocated in narrow-minded limits!
For that matter – all the revolutions have happened when WE fought for our rights, when majority fought & won against minority. Isn’t it time we fight to get our God/Religion back?

Cricket to drive India’s future?

Believe it or not: The two new IPL teams have been sold for more money than many of the smaller nations’ economies could turn over in an entire year.
As a Punekar, let me first welcome the biggest Cricket brand to Aamche Pune! It will be heartening to see Pune’s team get on ground next year … Cheers!
On a broader level though, IPL’s increase in brand value & overall market capture has been nothing less than Astonishing – I mean we all knew that cricket was always gonna earn a lot in India, a major world economy but This fast? and SOOOOO Much?
US $370 M & $333 M for Pune & Kochi respectively is humongous & something we should take notice and interest in.
Just wondering if Cricket could be next driver of Indian economy – we already have software & outsourcing industries but the way Lalit Modi has brought about a change in Indian Cricket as a Product is fabulous & could well prove historic for India.
With deals like Sony TV & youtube making IPL cash rich, it’s set for only bigger leaps! Matches being shown in multiplex & improved ground-spectator experience – it is time for much more … Much more money & much more growth!
Of course, cynics have already made their cases against the money & some crap with ‘purity of cricket’ – but let me tell these historically-British-ruled people that it’s no more an English game. Cricket is going global & India is taking it to the world! (I still maintain it’s a sport & the essence needs to be alive forever.)
This is new India, rich India. This is new cricket with player auctions, cheer leaders.
Looking forward to many more of such milestone dates with India & my favorite sport, cricket!
Disclaimer: I am not the only one who’s been shaken by these developments, here are a few more (some of the views are bound to match)-
